Former Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade said his extramarital affair with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was “as American as apple pie.”

Speaking with ABC News, Wade said “workplace romances,” like his relationship with Willis, “happen to everyone.”

This is Wade’s first interview since he resigned from working on the Georgia election interference case of former President Donald Trump.

“Workplace romances are as American as apple pie,” Nathan Wade told ABC News‘ Linsey Davis.

“It happens to everyone. But it happened to the two of us.”

“Do you regret it?” Davis asked.

“I regret that that private matter became the focal point of this very important prosecution,” Wade said.

“This is a very important case.”

“I hate that my personal life has begun to overshadow the true issues in the case,” he added.

Judge Scott McAfee gave Willis the option to have Wade or her entire office step aside instead of disqualifying her.

Trump’s co-defendant, Michael Roman, alleged that Willis improperly benefitted from appointing Wade as special prosecutor when the two went on vacations together using funds earned from the role.

Wade told Davis that he considering putting his relationship with Willis “on pause” during Trump’s case before admitting that his feelings for her were “so strong.”

“At some point, once the bond is there, and if democracy is on the line, as has been described, do you say maybe we pause this until the case is over?” Davis asked.

“Absolutely, absolutely. I’ll concede that that could have been, an approach,” Wade said.

“But there again, when you are in the middle of it, these feelings are developing and you get to a point where the feelings are, are so strong that, you know, you start to want to do things that really are none of the public’s concern.”

Willis ditched her first debate in the Democratic primary as she seeks reelection as Fulton County district attorney, leaving Democratic challenger Christian Wise Smith facing an empty podium on April 28.
