Canadian city sued by Christian ministry for cancelling Sean Feucht worship concert over supposed ‘safety’ concerns

The city of Moncton is facing a lawsuit from a Christian ministry after it cancelled a concert featuring US Christian musician Sean Feucht just two days before the event was scheduled to take place last year.

Burn 24/7 Canada Worship Ministries Society is accusing the city of violating its freedom of expression by cancelling the event. The society filed an action in court on August 4 and is asking the city to acknowledge that it violated freedom of expression protections under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The society is also seeking $50,000 in damages.

The society had organized the “Let Us Worship” tour that features Feucht in the spring of 2025. The Moncton event was scheduled for July 24, 2025, and the city approved the application on April 30, 2025.

According to the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, the event was “intended to be a free, public gathering focused on worship and the Gospel message.”

“Over the following months, organizers continued working with City staff on logistical arrangements, including site planning, insurance, washroom facilities, water access, and scheduling,” the centre said in a press release. “The Society says it complied with every request made by the City.”

The event, however, was cancelled by the city on July 22, 2025. Moncton Mayor Shawn Crossman said at the time that the event had been determined to be “non-compliant” with the city’s code of conduct for city facilities.

“In addition, due to evolving safety and security considerations, including confirmation of planned protests, the City has determined that the event poses potential risks to the safety and security of community members, event attendees, and organizers,” Crossman said.

The society disputed the city’s reasoning, arguing that it would have complied with the city’s policies and worked to address security concerns. It alleged that the event was ultimately cancelled due to opposition against Feucht.

According to a report by CP24, this wasn’t the only time in which a city in the Maritimes cancelled a concert featuring Feucht.  He was also set to perform at York Redoubt National Historic Site near Halifax, but the permit for the event was revoked by Parks Canada.

“This is the classic playbook of the media, of the anti-Christian bigots out there that hate Christians,” Feucht wrote on social media after the permit was revoked. “This is the same, exact place where people gathered for a Pride event last week. But now they’re not so tolerant when peaceful Christians come together.”
