The South Carolina Citizens for Life Committee (SCCLC) congratulates the successful pro-life candidates in Tuesday’s general election and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting innocent human life from conception until natural death.

The election brought important victories for the pro-life movement in South Carolina, the most important being the election of pro-life Alan Wilson as Governor with Mike Reichenbach as Lieutenant Governor, and David Stumbo as the Attorney General, the state’s top lawyer. Mr. Wilson is currently the State Attorney General and Mr. Reichenbach, R-Florence, currently serves in the S.C. Senate. Mr. Stumbo currently serves as the solicitor for the 8th Judicial Circuit (Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens, and Newberry).

We congratulate the many pro-life members of the South Carolina House of Representatives who won re-election and the newly elected legislators who share our commitment to protecting unborn children and their mothers. Despite the loss of ten incumbent Republicans, the House maintains a strong majority of members committed to protecting innocent human life.

At the same time, we are deeply disappointed by pro-life U.S. Senator Darline Graham’s loss to Democrat Annie Andrews, whose support for restoring Roe v. Wade stands in sharp contrast to South Carolina’s longstanding commitment to protecting unborn human life.

“We congratulate Governor-elect Alan Wilson and the other successful pro-life candidates who will help shape the future of South Carolina,” said Lisa Van Riper, President of the South Carolina Citizens for Life Committee. “We thank Senator Darline Graham for her willingness to stand for the most vulnerable members of our human family. Although we are disappointed by the outcome of the U.S. Senate race, our commitment to defending innocent human life is stronger than ever.”

SCCLC looks forward to working with Governor-elect Wilson, Attorney General-elect Stumbo, and members of the General Assembly to defend South Carolina’s landmark Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act, to strengthen protections for unborn children, and to address the growing threat of abortion-inducing drugs being shipped illegally into our state.

“For more than five decades, we have worked with elected officials of both political parties to enact legislation protecting unborn children and supporting their mothers,” Mrs. Van Riper said. “These achievements include parental consent, informed consent, protections for infants born alive, Daniel’s Law providing safe havens for abandoned newborns, and the Fetal Heartbeat Act which is showing a dramatic decline in the number of reported abortions occurring in South Carolina.”

Mrs. Van Riper said, “Our mission does not depend on the outcome of any single election. We will continue working to build a culture of life in which every unborn child is welcomed into life and protected under law, every mother receives compassionate support, and the medically fragile members of our human family are treated with dignity and respect.”

SCCLC remains especially committed to stopping the trafficking of mail-order abortion drugs into South Carolina and supporting pregnancy care centers that provide extraordinary, free-of-charge, practical assistance to women facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies.

“The right to life is not a Republican right or a Democratic right. It is the first and most fundamental human right,” Mrs. Van Riper said. “Election results may change the political landscape, but they cannot change the humanity of an unborn child. Our work continues, and we will not give up.”
