Why Would I Want to Blow Up the Global Financial System?

“Why Would I Want to Blow Up the Global Financial System?”

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stood at a podium and declared economic D-Day against Iran. The campaign is named Operation Economic Outcast, and a mission statement to match:
Sever “every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone.”
No one, he warned, is above the reach of US sanctions.
Then came the fine print.
An Invasion with a Grace Period
The new measures sanction about 60 entities, vessels, and individuals across five countries, and threaten secondary sanctions on anyone still doing business with Tehran. Threaten, not impose. Most take effect only after a cure period, because, in Bessent’s words, “we are giving everyone the opportunity to remedy bad behavior.” It is a strange sort of D-Day…
Stranger still is what the operation leaves untouched. China buys more than 80 percent of Iran’s seaborne crude, and the Chinese banks that clear those payments appear nowhere in the package. The blockade has done real damage on its own. Kpler’s ship-tracking shows Iran’s flows to China down from a 1.4 million barrel per day average last year to 534,000 in August. The remaining lifeline is exactly the one the sanctions leave alone.

Bessent’s Already Seen the Consequences
Why the hesitation? Because has already seen the consequences back in April. When the naval blockade first choked Iran’s ports, Brent ripped from the low $60s in January to $138 by April 7. Washington retreated to a 60-day waiver in June, crude fell back below $70, the blockade returned on July 13, and Brent sits near $95 today.

That’s the box Bessent lives in. Enforce the sanctions he announced and half a million barrels a day vanish into a market that showed you its temper five months ago, in front of an electorate heading into midterms. Decline to enforce them and the D-Day speech becomes just another press conference.
The Truth, Revealed
During the press conference, Bessent said the quiet part out loud. Asked about cutting off Iran’s remaining buyers, he answered with a question:
“Why would I want to blow up the global financial system?”
I don’t think he was meant to say that part. 😂

The Treasury Secretary of the United States concedes that his primary weapon, full exclusion from the dollar system, is too destructive to fire. We he’s saying is another confession that the American empire is on the decline, and they don’t have the raw power to follow through on their threats/promises. Every finance ministry from Beijing to Riyadh heard it:
The dollar weapon has a ceiling, the ceiling is the oil price, and the more Washington brandishes it, the faster the world builds payment routes that make the next D-Day speech quieter than this one.
