NEW: London Terror Suspect Recognized As Somali Immigrant
The suspect in the stabbing incident in Golders Green, north London, has been identified as a 45-year-old British national born in Somalia.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:16 a.m. on in Highfield Avenue, Golders Green, an area with a large Jewish population. Two Jewish men, one aged 76 and one aged 34, were stabbed and immediately transported to an area hospital, where they remain in stable condition.
According to the Jewish neighbourhood watch group Shomrim, the suspect was seen running along Golders Green Road armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public. One victim was stabbed while leaving a synagogue, and the other at a bus stop.
The suspect also attempted to stab responding police officers, though no injuries to officers were reported.
Local officers and armed officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service. Shomrim volunteers helped detain the suspect before police deployed a Taser to subdue him until local police arrived.
The suspect was initially taken to hospital, where concerns were raised that he might be carrying an explosive device, but he was later discharged and taken to a London police station, where he remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. Officers are carrying out a search at an address in south-east London as of this report.

“Counter Terrorism Policing has now formally declared this incident a terrorist attack. This is another horrendous act of violence directed at our Jewish communities, which follows the targeted series of arson attacks, and it will rightly shock and anger people across London, in the immediate communities, and across the country,” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said during a press conference.
Police confirmed additional details about the suspect during the press conference. “A 45-year-old man, who is a British national, born in Somalia, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was initially taken to hospital but has since been discharged and has been taken to a London police station where he remains in police custody,” counter terrorism officials said.
Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and security services to establish a full intelligence picture. The probe includes examination of the suspect’s electronic devices and any potential connection to organized extremist groups.
A claim of responsibility by a group linked to Iran known as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia is under separate investigation, but no connection has been confirmed as of this report.
