ICE Arrests Illegal Alien Working For Congressional Campaign In Swing State

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a Nigerian national on October 1 after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor disorderly-conduct charge stemming from a public exposure incident in central Pennsylvania. DHS identified the man as Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe and said local reporting indicated he had been working as a canvasser for Janelle Stelson, the Democratic nominee in Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District, at the time of the incident.

According to DHS, Igbojekwe was lawfully admitted to the United States in June 2017. His authorized period of stay ended in November 2019, after which he remained in the country without authorization. In September 2021 he was granted deferred action under the Biden administration.

DHS described him as an illegal alien subject to removal following the recent conviction.

East Pennsboro Township police arrested Igbojekwe on September 27 in a residential area of Mechanicsburg, near a park, after reports of a man sitting in a vehicle for several hours. Court records summarized by local outlets state that when an officer made contact, Igbojekwe opened the door wearing only a shirt, with his genitals exposed.

He told police he was waiting to distribute campaign flyers for Stelson and pointed to literature inside his vehicle.

Igbojekwe was initially charged with indecent exposure and disorderly conduct. Court records later showed that the indecent-exposure charge and one disorderly-conduct count were withdrawn, and that he pleaded guilty to a single third-degree misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

An immigration detainer was filed, and ICE took him into custody on October 1 after his release from Cumberland County Prison.

On October 7, DHS issued a statement linking the arrest to the campaign. “It’s unbelievable that Janelle Stelson would employ an illegal alien to work on a Congressional campaign, let alone a pervert who exposed himself in public,” said ICE Deputy Director Charles Wall

He added that the department is working to remove “dangerous illegal aliens” and that the Trump Administration “will always put the safety of the American people first.” DHS cited local reporting that Igbojekwe had been canvassing for the campaign when the incident occurred.

Stelson’s campaign rejected any connection. “This individual is not and has never been employed by the Janelle Stelson campaign. If he is an illegal immigrant who committed a crime he should be deported. We never heard of him prior to the news of his arrest. We are grateful to law enforcement for acting swiftly to arrest him,” campaign manager Alma Baker said in a statement.

Stelson, a former local television anchor, is challenging Republican Representative Scott Perry in a rematch of the 2024 race, which Perry won by roughly one percentage point. The race is projected as one of the nation’s closest midterm contests and could prove decisive in deciding control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
