JUST IN: Golf Icon Phil Mickelson Entered Treatment Facility For Addiction, Family Trauma
Phil Mickelson voluntarily entered a treatment facility for family trauma and addiction and has since left, a representative confirmed in a statement to TMZ Sports on Wednesday, September 30.
“Phil was seeking treatment for family trauma and addiction,” the representative told TMZ Sports. The facility was not named, and no details were provided on the length of the stay, though Mickelson is no longer at the facility as of this report.

The confirmation followed months in which Mickelson, 56, was largely absent from competition. He played only one event in 2026, LIV Golf South Africa in March after missing the first LIV Golf events of the year and all four major championships.
“I will not be able to participate in the first two LIV events as Amy and I need to be present for a family health matter,” Mickelson said back in February.
On April 2, he announced that he would skip the Masters. “Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter. I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club and it is definitely the most special week of the year. I wish everyone the best of luck and will be watching,” the legendary golfer said at the time.
That 2026 season was the first since 1989 in which Mickelson missed all four majors.
Mickelson has previously discussed gambling publicly. In a 2023 social media post he said he had “crossed the line of moderation and into addiction,” that the habit had harmed relationships, and that he had received professional help for years. Representatives have not identified the addiction referenced in the September 30 statement.
During the same period in 2026, reports circulated about alleged misconduct, including an accusation of nonconsensual physical contact with a female employee at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe and separate accounts from Ashley Perez, the former wife of golfer Pat Perez. Mickelson’s attorney and representatives denied or disputed aspects of those reports.
“Some of the allegations circulating about Mr. Mickelson are false, and others revisit mistakes he has already acknowledged, publicly or privately,” a representative for Mickelson said at the time.
“Recovery is not a straight line. Throughout their 35-year relationship, his wife, Amy Mickelson, has supported Mr. Mickelson and their family with extraordinary grace, unwavering love and the belief that people are measured not only by their failures, but by what they do to make them right. Mr. Mickelson’s priority is to become the husband, father, and man his family deserves. Right now, that means giving his full attention to a private family health matter. He understands that parts of his life are public, but his family’s private matters are not.”
