A mob of around 200 anti-ICE agitators clashed with NYPD outside a Brooklyn hospital in New York City on Sunday evening when federal officials took an illegal alien from Nigeria into custody. The man, had a previous criminal record and when ICE agents attempted to detain him, DHS said, he used his vehicle against agents and then asked to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national illegally in the US, detained by ICE officials on Saturday after he was previously arrested for assault and criminal drug possession. He was overstayed a tourist visa in 2023.

“During his arrest, Okeke refused to comply with officers’ lawful commands to exit the vehicle and weaponized his vehicle to attempt to hit ICE officers. Okeke became physically combative attempting to punch and elbow ICE officers. Our officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest,” DHS said in a post to X.

The statement from DHS was in response to a video posted by TMZ that showed anti-ICE agitators rioting outside the hospital. ICE agents removed Okeke after he had been treated at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in the Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood. The illegal immigrant had been admitted for a medical evaluation after the arrest on Saturday, but he was cleared by medical staff to leave.

“After his arrest, Okeke requested medical assistance, so ICE officers escorted him to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for a medical evaluation. Okeke remained non-compliant during the medical evaluation throwing himself to the floor and screaming. The medical staff cleared him,” DHS added.

“During the medical evaluation, a significant crowd of anti-ICE agitators gathered at the hospital and became violent. The protestors damaged several ICE vehicles and assaulted ICE officers, resulting in minor injuries to the officers. Assaulting law enforcement is a felony and crime Officers from the New York Police Department responded to the scene and arrested several rioters.”

Nine anti-ICE agitators were detained, eight arrested during the chaos as it ensued. Those eight were charged with obstructing government operations, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and resisting arrest, per Fox News.

When asked about the incident, Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he hadn’t seen the video, but that “ICE raids are cruel and inhumane,” per the Gothamist. “They do nothing to serve in the interest of public safety.”

New York City has so-called sanctuary laws which prevent local police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities to to remove criminal illegal aliens from the city.
