Why Joe Alwyn Was Barely in Taylor Swift's Miss Americana

Miss Americana director Lana Wilson opened up about why fans saw very little of Joe Alwyn in the documentary about Taylor Swift.

Lana, 41, revealed that she wasn’t really interested in filming Taylor, 34, and Joe’s relationship.

“I didn’t even meet him till the very end, but no, because her relationships have been through the microscope, I didn’t really have any interest in filming that,” Lana said during a screening of Miss Americana at the Museum of Moving Image in New York City on November 23, per the Daily Mail. “She’s been through so much, this should be private, like it’s not related to the themes in the film or what I thought she was going through right then.”

The director continued, “I thought she was going through something so profound and powerful, this real change that didn’t really have anything to do with her relationships so it was never something I wanted to film actually. It felt disrespectful and weird to me. It never occurred to me in a strange way.”

The “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” singer and Joe dated for over six years from 2016 to 2023. However, the former couple was notoriously private about their relationship. Taylor’s privacy with Joe, 33, is a stark contrast from her romance with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce.

The Conversations With Friends star and Taylor quietly went their separate ways just weeks after she began her historic Eras tour. Dedicated Swifties believe that the “Karma” artist alluded to her split from Joe during her performance on March 31, 2023, when she made a surprise change in her setlist.

Taylor had typically sang “Invisible String” in her previous shows, and many believed the tune was about Joe being her soulmate. However, she switched it out for her song “The 1,” a song about someone wishing a relationship would have worked out with an ex.

A little over a year later, Taylor released The Tortured Poets Department, and it included “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” which seemingly referenced her having to continue to perform for crowds every night in the midst of a breakup.

“Cause I’m a real tough kid, I can handle my s–t / They said, ‘Baby, gotta fake it till you make it,’ and I did / Lights, camera, bitch, smile, even when you wanna die / He said he’d love me all his life,” Taylor sings on the track.

However, toward the end of 2023, a smile seemed to return to Taylor’s face and by September 2023, she and Travis, 35, were dating. Since then, the couple has been open about their relationship and both enjoy talking about their time together.

“When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves,” Taylor said during her Time’s Person of the Year interview in December 2023. “We’re showing up for each other. Other people are there and we don’t care. The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.”
