Ukraine’s says its drone forces have landed their most sustained blow yet against Russia’s Crimea fuel supply chain. Over the 72 hours ending Wednesday morning, Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces struck 19 Russian “shadow fleet” vessels in the Sea of Azov — including 9 in a single overnight wave confirmed by drone forces commander Major Robert “Magyar” Brovdi. This has not been verified. The campaign reportedly targeted sanctioned tankers, each approximately 7,000 metric tons deadweight, that were ferrying gasoline from Russian ports to occupied Crimea. Also reportedly hit: at least one dry cargo ship and a ferry. Video of burning vessels circulated widely on Telegram.

The strategic logic is straightforward: if Ukraine cannot retake Crimea militarily in the near term, strangling the peninsula’s fuel supply is the next-best lever. Russia’s Kerch Bridge — already under strain — is now carrying a reduced train schedule, with 11 of 18 daily rail routes canceled as of Wednesday, per Wikipedia’s real-time war timeline. That compounds the sea-route pressure significantly.

Simultaneously, Russia launched its third missile strike on Kyiv this week in the early hours of Wednesday. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed fires in storage and non-residential buildings on both banks of the Dnipro River, with at least two people injured. In Odesa, a separate missile strike injured 10, eight of whom required hospitalization, according to regional governor Oleh Kiper.

Zelenskyy was at Ankara during both strikes, using the summit stage to renew his appeal for anti-ballistic missiles. The optics are sharp: Ukraine’s capital is being hit while its president lobbies NATO allies for the tools to stop it. That argument landed harder this cycle given Russian forces’ successful depletion of Kyiv’s Patriot interceptor stockpiles — a problem CDM flagged in the July 6 brief.

A parallel development: Russian forces are now deploying heavy electronic jamming systems and cargo camouflage specifically to counter Ukraine’s “mid-strike” drone campaign, which uses Starlink connections to hit targets dozens of kilometers behind front lines. Ukrainian drone pilots confirmed to JP that Russia’s countermeasures are evolving, though they described them as not yet decisive.

CDM note on figures: Brovdi’s numbers on tankers hit are from Kyiv’s official drone command. The real damage picture — how many ships were mission-killed versus damaged — is not independently verifiable. Treat the 19 figure as an upper bound, not a confirmed loss tally. Russia has not publicly acknowledged vessel losses.

Zelenskiy pushing for American technology to be produced (and laundered) in Ukraine is hopefully a non-starter with the Trump team. The answer is peace, a return to negotiations for both side; to end the klling.
