Romney accuses Trump of trying to undermine Biden on border bill: ‘Really appalling’

Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) blasted former President Donald J. Trump over his discouraging of Republican lawmakers over a border security deal that is currently being hammered out, accusing him of meddling in the process to undermine Joe Biden’s reelection hopes.

The retiring Romney, who has spent the golden years of his life gripped by a strange obsession about Trump, unloaded on the GOP frontrunner on Thursday, venting to CNN’s Manu Raju that he found it “appalling” that the all but certain nominee would exert his influence on members of Congress over what many of them see as a raw deal.

“I think the border is a very important issue for Donald Trump,” Romney told Raju. “And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is really appalling.”

“But the reality is that we have a crisis at the border, the American people are suffering as a result of what’s happening at the border, and someone running for president ought to try to get the problem solved as opposed to saying, ‘Hey, save that problem. Don’t solve it. Let me take credit for solving it later,’” the retiring senator added in his typical sanctimonious tone.

“Anger and confusion on Hill as Trump appears to have blown up delicate compromise on immigration — and with it, aid to Ukraine and Israel. Senators now scrambling to figure out what’s next,” Raju wrote on X.

‘Pierre Delecto’ has to be fuming watching the resilient Trump as he roars to the nomination unopposed with the exception of Nikki Haley who many think could soon be roadkill. It wasn’t supposed to be this way for the Never Trumpers who have cheered every dirty trick used against the former and perhaps future president only to now see their worst nightmare slowly playing out in front of their stunned faces.

The failed presidential candidate was among Senate Republicans who are fuming over Trump’s opposition to the latest Ukraine aid giveaway which is being combined with tepid measures to address the border, a fig leaf for sixty billion dollars of taxpayer money to be sent to the notoriously corrupt Eastern European country, a top priority for America-last lawmakers like Romney and many others.

“This proposal would have had almost unanimous Republican support if it weren’t for Donald Trump,” one unnamed Republican senator told CNN.

“I’m not giving up. This is not about Trump and this is not about me. This is about our country. This is about democracy around the world. This is about security for our own country and so let’s keep pushing to get this border deal,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), according to CNN. “Let’s stand by the commitments that we have made for our friends and our allies so that our word actually means something.”

The talking points evidently went out with disgraced former GOP congresswoman Liz Cheney making the same accusation.

“If it’s true that McConnell said, you know, basically, you know, we thought we had a deal, but now it looks like, you know, Trump’s going to be the nominee and he wants to run on this. I mean, that that is so cynical and irresponsible,” the malicious former January 6 committee attack dog said on the left-wing Pod Save America podcast.

Establishment Washington was rocked by a Wednesday report that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that Trump’s dominance in the early primaries and disfavor of the deal had put senators “in a quandary,” remarks originally reported by Punchbowl News.

But some pushed back on the suggestion that McConnell was backing down on the deal.

“That’s like parallel universe sh*t. That didn’t happen,” said Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) according to reports.

Trump reacted to Romney’s remarks in a Thursday night post to Truth Social.

“In response to the Statement made by Pierre Delecto, I haven’t spoken to him (Mitt Romney!) in years, and he knows nothing about me, or my views. Fortunately, he will permanently be leaving the Senate soon, and our Country will be a better place for it. But, that being said, we need a Strong, Powerful, and essentially “PERFECT” Border and, unless we get that, we are better off not making a Deal, even if that pushes our Country to temporarily “close up” for a while, because it will end up closing anyway with the unsustainable Invasion that is currently taking place – A DEATH WISH for the U.S.A.!…,” Trump wrote.
