REPORT: Dem Congressman Storms Out Of Meeting After Shouting Match With Trans Activists
U.S. Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-VA), reportedly stormed out of a recent meeting with constituents after he was shouted down by a group of transgender activists.
Vidnman, a first-term congressman representing Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, meeting of the King George County Democrats on Tuesday, August 11, in King George County. The discussion instead centered on his May 2026 vote in favor of H.R. 2616, legislation backed primarily by Republicans that addresses policies related to transgender students in schools.
The legislation, known as the Stopping Indoctrination and Protecting Kids Act or PROTECT Kids Act, passed the House on May 20, by a vote of 217-198. Vindman was one of eight Democrats who joined Republicans in supporting the measure.
The bill would condition certain federal education funding for public elementary and middle schools on requirements that schools obtain parental consent before changing a minor student’s gender marker, pronouns, or preferred name on school forms, or before providing different sex-based accommodations. It also includes provisions restricting the teaching of concepts related to what the legislation describes as gender ideology. The measure has not advanced in the Senate.
During the King George County meeting, at least two transgender women and one transgender man raised concerns about the vote. They questioned how Vindman could express support for LGBTQ+ community members while backing the legislation, and they shared personal experiences involving disclosure of their gender identity to parents.

A transgender individual at the meeting described remaining closeted into his 20s due to fear of parental rejection and stated that earlier disclosure through school channels would have created “significant difficulties” for him. He later explained that a teacher or counselor can sometimes serve as a key supportive adult for a transgender child, and advocated for school employees to keep issues like gender identity secret from parents.
Joseph Gaborow, vice chair for membership of LGBT+ Democrats of Virginia and secretary of the King George Democratic Committee, told Vindman that the organization disagreed with the vote. Gaborow pressed the congressman on cases involving children without supportive parents.
Vindman responded by stating that he continues to support LGBT people. He described the legislation as a political strategy by Republicans aimed at competitive districts and said his vote reflected his role as a parent. “I’m a parent. I’m a dad,” he said. “I care deeply about my kids, and that’s what I voted on.”
He added that he seeks to help the majority of people most of the time and acknowledged that the policy would not assist everyone. When the discussion continued, Vindman’s campaign manager indicated it was time to move on. Vindman invited those wishing to discuss the matter further to continue in the hallway.
The discussion then continued, and became increasingly heated as the assembled activists were unhappy with the asnswers they received. Profanities were exchanged between Vindman and Gaborow, according to a report from Advocate.com, and Vindman walked out.
A day later, Vindman issued an apology to the outlet and the trans activists. “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions,” he said. “I failed to meet my own high standards, and for that I am sorry. As a leader, I should spend more time listening and less time talking. Last night I failed to do that.”
