Missouri Should Have No Regrets Trying to Save Babies From Abortion

On November 3, voters in three states made decisions about abortion that impact generations.

In my home state of Missouri, voters rejected Amendment 3, keeping the 2024 abortion-rights amendment in place. Virginia and Nevada both voted to write abortion rights into their state constitutions.

I stood at press conferences in Kansas City and Jefferson City the day before the vote alongside coalition leaders like Governor Kehoe and Chloe Cole and told my story, and my birth mother Ruth’s story, as fellow Missourians.

I’d do it again tomorrow even if I knew the vote would end in the same result, because educating people through stories is how we change hearts and minds and change the votes cast on amendments like these.

But I want you to hear this from me clearly: these losses are not the end of anything.

They’re a call to do what has to be done.

Here’s the reality: An estimated 1.1 million abortions took place in the U.S. last year, the most in more than 15 years. A growing share happen through pills mailed to women’s homes.

And when an abortion fails, which some always will, there’s a baby who survives, a mother who’s often alone and afraid, and a family left with questions no one will answer.

Most people have no idea these women, children and families exist. Many of our leaders don’t, either. That’s exactly why The Abortion Survivors Network exists. We

Walk alongside abortion survivors, nearly 1,300 of whom we’ve now documented, along with their mothers and families, with care and community.

Equip pregnancy centers to help women whose abortions failed or who stopped or reversed them.

Share survivors’ stories with the public, the media and leaders in both political parties, so they can no longer look past these lives.

Laws can change with an election. Hearts change when people see the truth. I’ve watched it happen in a single conversation, when someone meets a survivor for the first time and realizes that “the abortion” was a person who lived.

That’s the work in front of us. We aren’t defined by a ballot result. We’re defined by who we show up for next.

When you give, you’re helping a survivor, mom, or family be seen by people who’ve never thought about them, including lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Here’s what we’ve learned even during this past election cycle: many churches and conservatives don’t know how often abortions fail, or what survivors, mothers, and families need afterward.

If the church doesn’t know, the wider culture doesn’t either.  Survivors, mothers and families then stay unseen and unserved. Our culture remains unchanged. And the losses for life will continue at the ballot box.

This day after the election, here’s some good news. You can end this cycle!

Through our new initiatives, you can:

  • Educate your church about abortion survivors and the families who need care
  • Support ASN so survivors and families get the care they need
  • Host a speaker so your community hears these stories firsthand

Roll up your sleeves, we’ve got work to do! I would love for us to partner with your church in 2027 and look forward to hearing from you.
