Mike Rogers Has a Real Chance to Beat Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan

Are you getting pumped for the November 3 midterm elections? I know I am. Let’s be sure we share that enthusiasm and, of course, vote.

Last Monday, I began my semi-annual countdown until election day. I made, and continue to make, the argument that our fortunes are badly underestimated and that the “blue tsunami” is a perfect example of the wish being father to the thought.

I’m going to focus on two promising Senate races today and tomorrow. First, Michigan, where Republican Mike Rogers is squaring off against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. Second, in Minnesota where Michele Tafoya is taking on Peggy Flanagan. Flanagan is scandal-ridden Tim Walz’s Lt. Governor and has plenty of her own baggage.

Mike Rogers served in the Army, holding the rank of Lieutenant, and joined the FBI as a Special Agent in Chicago. He went on to serve in the Michigan Senate and represented the state in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 until 2015. El-Sayed in academician and former executive director of the Detroit Health Department.

Democrats notoriously rely on winning the inner city and surrounding suburbs by huge margins. But El-Sayed lost to Haley Stevens, his primary opponent, by almost 30 points in Detroit and Wayne County (of which the Motor City is the largest city) by almost 8 points. We’ll see if the euthanasia meter takes a huge jump; El-Sayed will need it.

According to Amy Curtis, Rogers “is dropping a brutal ad showing Detroit residents voting for him.”

“Abdul is way too arrogant and way too extreme,” said Valeria Berry, a lifelong resident of Detroit. “I voted for Barack Obama, but this year I’m voting for Mike Rogers,” said Naura Evans. Rogers also “had a great breakfast with Democrat Detroit City Councilwoman, Mary Waters.”

Polls show Rogers closing in. Most show him within 1-2 points. Along with Minnesota, Michigan may represent the best odds for Republicans to pick up a Senate seat.
