Doral, Florida – Last Friday the woke progressive Democrat Mayor of Miami-Dade County vetoed the resolution of the County Commissioners to remove fluoride from the public water supply. The Commission is made up of 13 Commissioners, and the removal vote was 8-2, with three not present. The eight Commissioners who supported this resolution need to persuade only one more in order to overturn this veto. Your correspondent is not sure if this veto will be overturned, but we should never have gotten into this situation.

The Democrat County Mayor holds what the Florida legislature has mistakenly labeled a non-partisan public office. Come on, man! All public offices are partisan, and beyond that, all are ideological. There are the two major political parties – – Republicans and Democrats- – and third parties for losers. Within those two major parties, there are ideological divides between progressives and conservatives.

There used to be conservative Democrats, like Senator Zell Miller of Georgia, but today woke progressives have completely taken over the Democrat party. Republicans are divided between: (1) the RINO establishmentarians who treat politics as if it were a business, and try to run the party as if it were a private social club; versus (2) the grassroots conservatives of the MAGA and America First movement.
There are also voters who eschew partisanship, so they register as having No Party Affiliation. This way they forego the opportunity of voting in party primaries, which is where the big political choices are made in a state like Florida, where one party is dominant. Responsibility shirked may lengthen lifespans, or maybe not.

The Democrat-registered County Mayor won a non-partisan election in August last year against weak opposition. She won a majority of votes cast, with a turnout of around 19%, so that she did not have to face a runoff opponent during the general election in November. In that election, turnout was 72%. She probably would have lost then, given that President Trump won the county with 55% of the votes cast, and his coat-tails carried to victory all county-wide Republican candidates.
How is it that a county that voted 55% for Trump also voted for a woke progressive Democrat County Mayor? Leave it to the RINO’s!

She owes her decisive victory to the failure of the county Republican Executive Committee to support a strong opponent. The Republican opposition to the re-election of the Democrat County Mayor was so ineffective that the Republican Mayor of Homestead publicly endorsed her during her campaign, yet still won election to the REC at the same time, with support from REC leadership.

Let the People Decide

The County Mayor says that she vetoed the resolution removing fluoride from the public water supply following the guidance of medical experts, but which experts? The experts who in 2020 told us: “Two weeks to stop the spread” and “Stay six feet away”? Then the same experts approved of gathering and marching on behalf of Black Lives Matter. Those experts include the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Disease Control.

Yet there are just as many, if not more, experts who advise the public to remove fluoride from our water supply. These experts include Doctor Ladapo, the Surgeon General of the mostly free State of Florida. The state legislators are also debating a bill to remove fluoride.

When the advice from the experts conflict, and there is no scientific consensus, then a self-governing people should leave the question up to the people’s choice. Let those who want to buy toothpaste with fluoride do so, but government should not force all the people to pay for and use fluoride in their water that they may not want. The current County Mayor, however, will not let the people decide.

Accordingly, the time is now to start supporting effective new leadership for the REC, so that we do not fall into this situation again.

Doug Ross for Republican State Committeeman of Miami-Dade County

The leadership of the Republican Party of Florida includes one Committeeman and one Committeewoman from each of Florida’s 67 counties. The role of such Committeepersons is to represent the Republican voters of their county in front of the rest of the state. Miami-Dade is 70% Latino, but its Committeepersons perform in the Anglo political world of Florida Republicans.
The REC will elect a new State Committeeman at its next meeting on Maundy Thursday during Easter Week from the three candidates listed below:

1. Doug Ross is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, and a retired Naval aviator and Delta Airlines captain. During the Cold War, he flew anti-submarine aircraft over the North Atlantic Ocean. Today he works as a financial analyst and a columnist for this newspaper, and also serves as the Committeeman for District 11 in Miami Beach. His wife Hayley immigrated from Cuba and serves as a Committeewoman for the same District. They are proud grandparents. He voted for Reagan twice and Trump three times. He also voted twice for Governor DeSantis and supports him and his policies.

Unlike his two opponents, he does not hold any other public office. Accordingly, he will be free to dedicate his time and energy fully to the job of State Committeeman. Also, he does not aspire to higher office, so he will not be maneuvering for such.

His mission includes: (1) registering new Republican voters; (2) providing precinct captains for every precinct in the county; and (3) recruiting strong Republican candidates for every public office in this county. Those are three missions that the REC currently ignores.

He has a multi-decade record as a grassroots conservative, and has been a founding member of the MAGA and America First movement. Historians of the Bay of Pigs invasion have acknowledged the courage, tenacity and loyalty of Anglo-American pilots fighting that Communist regime.

2. Juan Carlos Porras is the State Representative for House District 119 around the Hammocks. He is 27-years old, and has served in the Florida House of Representatives since he was 24 years old. After graduating from FIU, he served as a legislative aide for federal and state officials. He was an early supporter of Trump for President in 2023, but has no visible means of support other than politicking.

He reports that his legislative record includes cutting taxes, advancing school choice, taking on corrupt HOA’s, and standing up to Communist regimes. His objectives as State Committeeman include: (1) energizing the Republican base; (2) growing the ranks of registered Republicans; and (3) promoting Republican candidates for all offices.

He is not on good terms with Governor DeSantis. In a recent appearance on Spanish-language television, he ridiculed the Governor for his tax proposals, and mocked the Governor’s term-limited status. He is on the side of House Speaker Perez, Senate President Albritton and Agriculture Commissioner Simpson. Concerned Republicans have written to Representative Porras expressing their disappointment with his behavior and asking him to apologize in public.

3. Dariel Fernandez was elected Tax Collector of Miami-Dade County last November, despite his lack of any tax, accounting or legal training, and his imperfect command of the English language. Yet he is an effective leader who will undoubtedly make the effort to master the workings of his new job.

He also owns an online media business, he has been a prior candidate for local office, and he serves as Committeeman for District 23 in Coral Gables and South Miami. He is a devoted husband and father who immigrated from Cuba in 2002, right after completing his college education.

He proclaims that his main commitment is to focus on fundraising for the county party so that it may compete more effectively. Last year he ran a grassroots campaign, stayed true to conservative principles, took on an establishment politician from the left with a huge bank roll, and (riding Trump’s coat-tails) won a county-wide election with a clear mandate from the people of Miami-Dade County to serve as Tax Collector.

Both Juan Carlos and Dariel are aligned with the establishment that currently runs the REC, so their promises to re-energize the county party ring hollow. See: https://miamiindependent.com/miami-dade-republican-executive-committee-serves-bread-circuses/. The Republican victories last November in this county were due mostly to President Trump’s coat-tails, not to the candidates, their campaigns or the party.

A new and dynamic State Committeeman like Doug Ross will make a big difference in re-energizing the campaigns of the party’s candidates for the next election, when President Trump will not be on the ballot.
