Witnesses armed with a rolling pin, a signboard, and a shovel stopped the alleged attack. Prosecutors secured an attempted-manslaughter warrant.

A 50-year-old German citizen born in Kazakhstan stabbed his estranged wife inside a Kirberg bakery before witnesses fought him off with a rolling pin, a signboard, and a shovel.

The West Hesse police said the man entered the bakery on Wassergasse at about 11 a.m. on Sept. 20 with a kitchen knife. His separated wife, also 50, was inside. Police said she suffered multiple serious stab and cut wounds.

The victim escaped outside, but the violence continued, according to video accounts reported by t-online. Bystanders moved in. The Limburg prosecutor’s office said they struck the attacker with a rolling pin, a signboard, and a shovel, forcing him to stop.

The woman underwent emergency surgery. The suspect suffered a lung tear during the intervention and was airlifted to a hospital. Both survived and were no longer in immediate danger, Hessenschau reported.

Prosecutors obtained a warrant charging the man with attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm. The defendant had not commented on the allegations and was to be transferred to a justice hospital in Kassel.

OE24 reported that the suspect holds German citizenship and was born in Kazakhstan.
