Former President Joe Biden Suffers Health Setback As Cancer Spreads, Son Says
Hunter Biden revealed in a recent interview with BBC Newsnight that his father, former President Joe Biden, has experienced further spread of his prostate cancer. He added that the former president, 83, is experiencing increased pain as a result of the recent setback.
“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter stated in the interview. “It’s very painful and it’s very debilitating in many respects,” he added.
Hunter, the president’s sole surviving son, described the situation as difficult for the Biden family. “The only thing that I’d say about my dad, about his health right now, is I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good,” he added, further describing the situation as “really ad to watch.”
Despite the effects of the disease, he noted that his father remains active in public life. “He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter Biden said. “He so believes in this country.” He also referred to his father as remaining central to the family, saying, “My dad is, to this day, the center of our family. He’s the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather.”

Joe Biden’s office first announced the cancer diagnosis in May 2025, less than four months after he left the White House in January of that year. A statement given at the time indicated that he had been evaluated after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms, which led to the finding of a prostate nodule.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer characterized by a Gleason score of 9 with metastasis to the bone. The office described it as an aggressive form of the disease that appeared to be hormone-sensitive, allowing for effective management that could keep the disease in check.
This past October, a Biden spokesman confirmed that the former president was undergoing radiation treatment and hormone therapy. The radiation course, which lasted several weeks, took place at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia and was completed later that month. Biden marked the end of the radiation phase by ringing a ceremonial bell with his care team.
He has also continued hormone treatment as part of ongoing management. Separately, in September 2025, he underwent Mohs surgery to remove cancerous skin cells.
In a recent update given this past June, Jill Biden described the diagnosis as one that requires ongoing management. She noted that her husband would live with the disease for the rest of his life and would be forced to remain on specialized medications.
The former first lady further noted that he keeps a schedule but has slowed down, attributing this in part to the stage of the disease, his age, and the medications. In a more recent interview earlier this month, she stated he is doing okay, undergoes testing every three months, and that managing the condition is constant and challenging.
