Delray Beach, Florida – For years, climate alarmists have warned that unless we take drastic action against “climate change” (formerly known as global warming), places like Delray Beach, Florida—where I live—along with the rest of South Florida and coastal regions nationwide, will eventually be submerged by rising seas. Is this prediction accurate?
Florida’s geological history offers important perspective. Much of the Florida peninsula has been underwater for large portions of its existence. Sea levels have risen and fallen multiple times over the eons, driven by the advance and retreat of northern glaciers long before human industrialization. These dramatic changes occurred without any contribution from CO₂ produced by fossil fuels, automobiles, or modern industry. They were the result of natural cycles, not human activity.
Local media, such as the Sun Sentinel, has aggressively promoted the narrative that South Florida faces imminent doom from global warming. The proposed solution typically mirrors the “Green New Deal” agenda championed by figures like Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, the Squad, and John Kerry – – rapidly phasing out fossil fuels in favor of renewable energy sources.
However, any clear-eyed assessment shows that abruptly eliminating fossil fuels is neither practical nor wise. Our economy and modern way of life remain heavily dependent on the reliable, high-density energy they provide. Recent events highlight the vulnerabilities of renewables. During Texas’s severe cold snap, wind turbines—then supplying about 25% of the state’s electricity—froze and failed. Solar power faces similar limitations during extended cloudy periods. While we should continue developing cleaner and more reliable energy alternatives, pretending we can reliably replace fossil fuels entirely in the near term is unrealistic and risks economic harm.
Climate change has become something of a secular “holy grail” for the political left—the ultimate existential threat, often prioritized above challenges like competition with China, pandemics, or geopolitical adversaries from Iran to Russia. Dissenters are routinely labeled “climate deniers” and portrayed as enemies of humanity, even when they simply point out inconsistencies or historical context.
It is worth noting the irony – – prominent climate advocates such as Al Gore, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden own beachfront properties. If they genuinely believed their own rhetoric about catastrophic sea-level rise, one might expect different choices. This gap between words and actions raises legitimate questions about sincerity.
Most Americans support clean air and water, and we have made substantial environmental progress while using fossil fuels. There is no need to cripple our economy with unrealistic mandates. A rational approach would pursue cleaner energy technologies without discarding reliable fossil fuels in the process. Both can—and should—play a role as we innovate.
Florida and the rest of the United States will endure this latest wave of environmental alarmism. Natural disasters, from hurricanes to wildfires, have always occurred and will continue regardless of our energy mix. We should reject fear-driven narratives and focus instead on practical stewardship of our environment while preserving American prosperity.
