DOJ Charges James Comey Over Disclosure of National Defense Information – Journal Posts
The Justice Department has charged former FBI Director James Comey under the Espionage Act with unlawfully disclosing national defense information and conspiring to provide it to an unauthorized person, alleging he directed the information to be shared with a reporter in October 2016.
According to a criminal information filed under seal on October 5 and unsealed on Monday, Comey knowingly and willfully transmitted national defense information to someone not entitled to receive it, despite having reason to believe it could harm the United States or benefit a foreign nation.
The filing alleges that Comey and others conspired to violate federal law and that, on October 5, 2016, he directed an individual through one or more co-conspirators to disclose national defense information to a reporter for a national news publication.
Prosecutors charged Comey under federal law governing the unauthorized transmission of national defense information and conspiracy. The filing seeks forfeiture of property derived from or traceable to the alleged offenses if he is convicted.
