Democrats Controlling Senate Committees Would Kill the Pro-Life Agenda

There is no “sitting out” this election for pro-life people.

Aside from the 250 Victories for People of Faith, all of which help our movement to protect the unborn, there are numerous implications for the pro-life movement when one starts to consider the powers and responsibilities of the people we elect.

If you were asked who is currently the Surgeon General of the United States, the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Commissioner of the IRS, you would rightly be hard-pressed to give an answer.

That’s because all three positions are vacant.

The President selects the people to fill these positions, and in each case, the US Senate confirms them.

The confirmation process involves hearings in front of the relevant committees, who then vote on whether or not to let the nomination proceed to a full vote of the Senate.

If the Democrats have a majority in the Senate, they control the committees. They automatically have a majority on the relevant committees, and it is a guarantee that they will never confirm a nominee who has strong conservative and pro-life credentials.

Yet consider these positions that need to be filled.

The FDA Commissioner has under his/her responsibility the regulation, approval, safety and distribution of the abortion drug mifepristone.

Enough said. The implications for our movement are obvious.

The Surgeon General is the nation’s top doctor. He or she shapes public health communication and priorities, issues reports and advisories that influence national discussions about what is or isn’t good for the health of Americans.

Every issue regarding the impact of abortion on physical or mental health is affected by this.

And finally, the commissioner of the IRS affects how each of us, and our respective pro-life organizations, are treated in matters of tax policy and enforcement, appeals, exemptions for charitable organizations, and consistency of treatment of those who have religious missions.

The history of the relationship between the IRS and the pro-life movement shows how critical this position is. Many of us have suffered persecution under IRS commissioners who are less than favorable to our missions.

Certainly President Trump has proven he is vigorously opposed to the persecution of religious and pro-life people and organizations.

But the concern here is the US Senate. If for no other reason (and there are many other reasons) than Surgeon General, FDA Commissioner and IRS Commissioner, vote to keep the Senate in Republican hands!
