Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax is dead after what police say was a murder-suicide that unfolded inside his Fairfax County home early Thursday.

Authorities say Fairfax shot his wife multiple times before turning the gun on himself.

“Justin Fairfax shot and killed – shot several times – and killed his wife, ran to a different part of the home and then killed himself with the same firearm,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said during a Thursday morning press conference.

Investigators say the couple had been separated despite still living under the same roof and were in the middle of a divorce. According to Davis, Fairfax had recently been served legal papers tied to the proceedings, with court dates looming.

Police also pointed to a prior incident earlier this year when Fairfax contacted authorities.

“We know that because when Mr. Fairfax called us to their home back in January and alleged that his wife assaulted him in the home, we were able to go to those cameras and determine that that never occurred. So [sic] that’s the only time that the Fairfax County Police Department has ever been at the Fairfax home,” Davis added.

Fairfax, a Democrat, served as Virginia’s 41st lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 under Gov. Ralph Northam.

Born in Pittsburgh, he later moved to Annandale, Virginia. He and his wife shared two children.

Before entering statewide office, Fairfax built a career as a federal prosecutor and later worked in private practice, positioning himself as a rising figure within Virginia’s Democratic Party. A graduate of Duke University and Columbia Law School, he clerked for a federal judge and developed a reputation as a polished legal mind with ambitions beyond Richmond.

Fairfax first gained national attention during his 2017 run for lieutenant governor, when he defeated a crowded Democratic primary field and went on to win the general election. At the time, he was viewed as a potential future gubernatorial contender and a prominent voice among younger Democrats in the state.

His tenure, however, was overshadowed by controversy. In 2019, Fairfax faced allegations of sexual misconduct from multiple women, which he denied. The accusations rocked Virginia politics and derailed what many saw as a promising political trajectory.

Despite remaining in office through the end of his term, Fairfax never fully recovered politically. He later launched a bid for governor in 2021 but struggled to regain footing within the party and ultimately failed to secure the nomination, marking a sharp fall from his earlier standing as a rising star.
