Chris Christie Floats Run For President
Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is openly considering another White House bid, saying he has not ruled out making a third run for president in 2028.
Christie, who previously sought the Republican nomination in 2016 and 2024, raised the possibility Tuesday during an appearance in New Hampshire, a state that has long played an outsized role in presidential politics.
The former governor said the results of the 2026 midterm elections could help shape whether Republicans decide they need a different approach heading into the next presidential cycle.
“So, am I looking at it? Look, anybody who comes up here, anybody who comes up here and has ever run for president and not one and told you they’re not looking at it again is lying. …,” he said at the Granite State Summit on Responsible Gaming.
Christie argued that once a politician has seriously considered becoming president, the idea is difficult to abandon completely.
He added, “Once you go through the thought process of convincing yourself that you can be president, and then the next step that you should be president, that doesn’t leave your brain.”
Christie also acknowledged that another campaign would require convincing his wife, Mary Pat, that there is a realistic path forward.

“So, the way I look at this is, if I’m going to go back home to my wife and say, ‘I know you may not believe this, but third time is the charm,’ like, I better have a real theory,” the former governor continued. “And what she has said to me is, ‘Chris, I want to see the path.’”
Christie returned to New Hampshire this week for the Granite State Summit on Responsible Gaming, marking his first visit to the state since ending his 2024 presidential campaign.
He said Republicans’ performance in the November midterms will factor into his thinking and could influence the broader direction of the party.
Christie was once an ally of President Donald Trump but became one of his most outspoken Republican critics during the 2024 primary.
He suspended that campaign before the New Hampshire primary after struggling to gain support in a race dominated by Trump.
Chris Christie indicated Tuesday that he is in no rush to make a decision about 2028.
He said potential contenders are likely to wait until after the midterms before seriously weighing their options, leaving any announcement more likely sometime in 2027.
The 2028 Republican field remains unsettled.
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among several prominent Republicans who have drawn attention as possible future candidates, though neither has formally entered a 2028 race.
Christie, meanwhile, made clear that the idea of running again remains very much on his mind.
Whether that consideration turns into another presidential campaign will depend, he said, on what happens in the midterms and whether he can identify a viable path through the Republican primary.
