National Day of Remembrance Will Mourn 66 Million Babies Killed in Abortions
“Blessed are those who mourn.” An excerpt of Matthew 5:4, this scripture passage is the theme of the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children.
The National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children, now in its 14th year, is a joint project of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society and the Pro-Life Action League. The first event was held in 2013 on the 25th anniversary of the burial of the remains of some 1,500 aborted children in Milwaukee, Wis. The observance continues annually on the second Saturday of September.
This year the National Day of Remembrance is scheduled for September 12.

Pro-Life Action League Project Coordinator John Jansen discussed the event, how chemical abortion underscores its significance, and the role that mourning plays in bringing about healing and hope.
“The more this event goes on, the more we realize how sacred are the actual burial places of aborted children,” Jansen said.
“With each passing year we know there are more and more babies killed by the abortion pill,” he noted. These are aborted babies passed at home in bathrooms and disposed of, Jansen noted, “in a very undignified way.”
“Therefore,” he said. “The handful of sites where actual aborted babies’ remains have been recovered and given a proper burial, loom even larger and are that more significant.”
There are 60 known burial sites which are part of the 232 locations where remembrance services were held in 2025, with a total number of 1,050 sites on the map. There are 990 designated memorial sites set aside with memory stones where groups gather for the annual event and individuals can visit anytime to pray.
Jansen said that sites are being added all the time, often by Knights of Columbus fraternal service organizations across the country.
Last year’s event saw an increase in participation, including the burial site of aborted babies at Pierce Brothers Memorial Park in Riverside, Calif., where 54 babies have been laid to rest.
Other locations such as Berlin, N.H., have memorial stones and the service held in 2025 saw a boost in attendance there as well.
The reports from last year were markedly positive, with participants calling it a hope-filled experience.
Organizers say pro-life advocates should visit these gravesites and other memorial sites devoted to aborted children as a part of their pro-life witness. It is a way of humanizing the many lives lost to abortion.
Additionally, there is healing and life-giving blessing possible for those with an abortion experience in gathering to mourn the loss of life of the unborn.
The thought is that mourning is something that enables us to embrace the truth of what has been lost, which helps us to remember.
“This is my favorite event of the year that we do at Pro-Life Action League,” Jansen said. “It’s the one where I am brought to tears to realize the gravity of abortion – at the same time, to realize the immensity of God’s mercy and God’s consolation.”
“Most of us aren’t very good at mourning,” Jansen said. “It’s an odd thing to express grief over children you’ve never met. Yet we are called to mourn for them and that’s kind of a mystery.”
Jansen said that gathering with others to mourn for aborted children at the remembrance event can also be cathartic and a source of renewal for pro-life advocates.
“This is an event primarily for pro-lifers themselves,” he said, for ourselves to recharge spiritually, you might say and bring it home as to what we are doing.”
Jansen referenced the prevalence of abortion’s negative impact and those suffering the anguish of a past abortion.
“We can’t hope to have any progress culturally unless we reckon with this spiritually,” he said.
“Mourn for these children because they are members of the human family,” Jansen said. “They were created in God’s image like we were. They deserve to be mourned for.”
“If we don’t mourn for them, we don’t remember them,” he said.
