Rob Bonta is pro-choice — as long as the choice is abortion

A man has gone to court to tell California women what to do with their bodies.

That man is Rob Bonta, the state’s attorney general.

But wait, you say. Aren’t Democrats like Bonta pro-choice?

Well, yes — if that choice is abortion. If the choice is to save the baby, not so much.

Bonta said Friday that he expects to prevail in a lawsuit the state brought in 2023 against pro-life groups that offer abortion-pill reversal.

The procedure relies on high-dose progesterone to counter the abortion pill in women who have last-minute changes of heart.

California can’t have that, Bonta says, because pro-life groups allegedly fail to sufficiently warn women that reversing an abortion might cause severe bleeding.

Oh, please. 

There’s scant evidence that taking high-dose progesterone causes any more bleeding than an abortion pill does. Besides: Isn’t the risk-reward ratio for medication a matter best left to a woman and her doctor? 

For Bonta, though, it’s less about health than politics. In 2022, after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, he embarked on a grandstanding bender.

The AG said this: “I will use the full force of the law and the full authority of my office to protect a woman’s right to choose.”

And this: “When it comes to abortion care, it’s your body and your right to choose. Nobody else gets to make those decisions.”

And this: “We refuse to turn back the clock and let politicians exert control over a person’s body.”

The last one’s especially rich, given the push by Bonta to control abortion reversals. A woman is entitled to change her mind about carrying a pregnancy, even if politicians like Bonta would prefer that she didn’t.

The AG’s office and the pro-life groups, Heartbeat International and RealOptions Obria, have spent six weeks presenting evidence in an Alameda County bench trial, with a judge’s ruling to come.

But the public can render its own judgment on Bonta’s hypocrisy.

He’s pro-choice to the hilt if the choice is abortion.

He’s anti-choice if the choice is not abortion, but life.

And let’s talk regrets here, too. However reluctantly a woman might be to get pregnant, how often does she ultimately regret bringing life into the world?

So yes: If a woman wants to reverse the effects of an abortion pill and continue with her pregnancy, that should be her choice.

Somehow, though, AG Rob Bonta thinks it should be his.
