Izium, a city in what is today the Eastern Ukrainian province of Kharkiv Oblast, previously part of the Principality of Moscow and later the Tsardom of Russia, is home to various Orthodox churches and monasteries including Peschansk Monastery, within the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) which is in communion with the Moscow Patriarchate. The UOC is the largest Christian denomination in Ukraine, while the Zelensky regime, with the dubious support of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, formed the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) as a counter measure deemed to be more subservient to Kiev.
The Peschansk Monastery (UOC) in Izium reported that two monks—Archimandrite Leontiy and Hieromonk Arseniy—were taken away by representatives of the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) and the TRC (Territorial Recruitment Center). The event was not a courteous social call or a polite request to be interviewed but rather a physical abduction using force and surprise.
Reports indicate that the clerics are being held at a Territorial Recruitment Center with disregard for any “human rights” which a functioning democracy would afford them. Given the suspension of elections, civil rights, the existence of forced conscription, and charges of money laundering by the Kiev government, the monks seem to be replicating the experience of the Russian Church under Lenin and Stalin, with Ukrainian being the language of repression rather than Russian.
The monastery has temporarily suspended petitions for religious services, such as the “panikhida” for the deceased, until further notice, although religious leaders there are requesting prayers of support and intercession.
