The North Providence High School senior dedicated the moment to family members who were not there to witness it.
Robert Dorgan, the Rhode Island teenage hockey player who lost his mother, brother, and grandpa when his trans father, “Roberta” Dorgan, went on a shooting spree during a hockey game last month, just scored the game-winning goal in double overtime for his Blackstone Valley team, sending them to the championship game.
“It was the greatest moment of my life,” Dorgan said to local news WPRI after the game.
The North Providence High School senior dedicated the moment to family members who were not there to witness it. Dorgan wore a patch on his jersey with the initials of his mother, brother, and grandfather.
The tragedy claimed the lives of Dorgan’s mother, Rhonda, his older brother, Aidan, and his grandfather, Gerald. His grandmother, Linda, was critically injured in the attack, along with family friend Thomas Geruso.
“My good buddy fed me the puck, and I could hear the crowd,” Dorgan recalled. “It was a surreal moment.”
Blackstone Valley head coach Chris Librizzi said he knew something special was about to happen when Dorgan found space on the ice.
“I literally cried like a baby, the floodgates opened,” Librizzi said. “When I saw him open, I knew he was golden.”
Robert Dorgan opened fire on family members seated in the stands at the hockey game using a high-powered pistol. Witnesses said spectators tackled him during the chaos, after which Dorgan turned the gun on himself.
Police reports indicate that Dorgan had identified as a transgender woman in recent years, using the name “Roberta” and dressing in women’s clothing. Investigators also said family tensions had surfaced earlier; reports state that Gerald Dorgan asked Robert to leave the family home following transgender-related medical procedures in 2020.
