The U.S. Department of State has issued a critical security update for American citizens remaining in Iraq, warning that those who have not yet departed must be prepared to shelter in place for extended periods.
With Iraqi airspace currently closed and commercial flights suspended, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has moved to a “emergency-only” posture, suspending all routine consular services.
In its latest alert issued today, the Embassy emphasized that the security situation has become increasingly volatile due to “Operation Epic Fury” and the risk of retaliatory strikes.
Key Instructions for U.S. Citizens:
Stockpile Essentials: Americans are urged to maintain a supply of food, water, and essential medications sufficient for several weeks.
Secure Locations: Remain in your residence, hotel, or another secure structure. Stay away from windows and maintain a low profile.
Avoid Protests: High-tension areas like Baghdad’s July 14th Bridge and Tahrir Square remain flashpoints for violent anti-U.S. demonstrations.
Travel Documents: Ensure all passports and travel documents are up to date and easily accessible in case of a sudden overland evacuation window.
While the State Department continues to recommend that Americans “leave now,” the lack of air travel has made departure difficult. The Embassy is currently advising citizens to consider overland routes to Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, or Türkiye—though it warns that these borders can close without notice and travelers must secure their own transportation.
“Iran-aligned terrorist militias continue to pose a significant threat to public safety,” the Embassy stated. “The risk of missiles, drones, and rockets in Iraqi airspace remains a constant factor.”
