Yellowstone Spinoff With Beth and Rip Is in the Works: Updates

While season 5 was the end of Yellowstone, it wasn’t the end of some of the Duttons’ stories. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who play Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, have signed on to star in a spinoff of their own. Now, viewers are curious what might be in store for the fan favorites.

Who Is Involved in the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff With Beth and Rip?

Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind the Yellowstone universe, will also be working on the upcoming spinoff. Deadline reported that the series will feature many of the same characters, like Beth and Rip, and will occur in the same timeline as the original series. The outlet also stated that this would be the only spinoff thus far to have Yellowstone in the title.

In August 2024, Deadline reported that Yellowstone producers had planned to have Kelly and Cole take over as the leads in future seasons of the show after John Dutton, the family’s patriarch played by Kevin Costner, died. The publication stated that Cole and Kelly had been “negotiating new deals for months.”

How Did the ‘Yellowstone’ Finale Set Up the Spinoff With Beth and Rip?

In the final episode of season 5, Beth and Rip decided to pack up their things and head to a new cattle ranch in Dillon, Montana. The setting will likely come with new complications as the Duttons rarely seem to avoid trouble for the most part.

Beth proposed the idea of the new ranch in the finale and asked Rip if he thought he “could make a living” there. Rip admitted that he believed he could, which was fortunate because Beth revealed she’d already purchased the land, much to his dismay. Of course, fans of the show likely remember that after Beth killed her brother Jamie and had Rip get rid of the body. They used the Dutton’s go-to spot for body disposal, and it just so happened to be on the border of Montana and Wyoming. Whether or not the pile of bodies the Duttons racked up over the years will come into play in Beth and Rip’s spinoff remains unclear, but the possibility is there.

There’s also the fact that John Dutton was one of the most powerful cattle ranchers in the area, and nobody makes it to the top without making a few enemies. That includes potential enemies over state lines, which is another possibility for Beth and Rip to consider in the future.

Why Did Kevin Costner Leave ‘Yellowstone’?

In June 2024, Kevin confirmed that he would not be returning for all of Yellowstone’s final season with a message shared via Instagram.

“Hi everyone. I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on Horizon and doing all the things that that’s required, and thinking about Yellowstone — that beloved series that I love, that I know you love – I just realize that I’m not going to be able to continue season 5b or into the future,” the Waterworld star wrote at the time. “It was something that really changed me. I loved it, and I know you loved it. I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning. I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”
