Wisconsin Approves Voter ID Amendment In Major Victory For Election Integrity

Wisconsin voters comfortably voted on Tuesday to enshrine the state’s voter I.D. law in its constitution in what is being hailed as a major victory for election integrity.

Wisconsin already requires that voters present a valid photo ID in order to cast a ballot, though Democrats have launched numerous efforts to do away with the law over the past several years. With Tuesday’s approval, the law will now be elevated to a constitutional amendment.

“I am unwilling to let this basic election integrity measure be overturned by the state Supreme Court,” state Senator Van Wanggaard, a co-author of the measure, said just before it passed in the Senate earlier this year. “The only way to ensure this stays the law of the land is to put it in the constitution.”

The measure was placed on the ballot after it cleared two consecutive legislative sessions in the GOP-controlled Wisconsin assembly and Senate. The constitutional language approved by voters Tuesday specifies that voters need to provide “valid photographic identification,” though it does not provide guidelines on acceptable forms of identification.

Instead, the amendment allows legislators to set guidelines on acceptable forms of ID and verification processes. Under existing law, Wisconsin voters can present a valid driver’s license, a state-issued non-driver ID, a military ID card or an ID card from the Veteran’s Health Administration, a U.S. passport, or an ID card issued by a federally-recognized Wisconsin Native American tribe.

Nine states, including Wisconsin, requires that voters present a photo ID in order to cast a ballot. A total of 36 states ask voters to present some form of identification before voting.

President Donald Trump celebrated the victory in a Truth Social post almost immediately after the race was called at 9:48 p.m. Eastern Time. “VOTER I.D. JUST APPROVED IN WISCONSIN ELECTION. Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT. This is a BIG WIN FOR REPUBLICANS, MAYBE THE BIGGEST WIN OF THE NIGHT. IT SHOULD ALLOW US TO WIN WISCONSIN, LIKE I JUST DID IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!” the president wrote.

Both President Trump and Republicans nationwide have campaigned for voter ID requirements in the aftermath of the controversial 2020 presidential election.

Just last week, Trump signed an executive order that compels states to require voters to present government-issued proof of U.S. citizenship in order to cast a ballot. It also calls for the attorney general to develop an information-sharing relationship with state election officials in order to identify any cases of election fraud or any other violations of election law.
