SPOILER ALERT: The following story contains major spoilers for Cobra Kai season 6 part 2 and part 3.
Does Kwon Die in ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6?
While Cobra Kai has plenty of violence by way of karate fights in practically every scene — some of which have resulted in serious injuries and hospitalizations for characters — the show has never gone as far as killing someone off during a fight scene. That’s why it was so shocking when Cobra Kai student Kwon Jae-Sung (played by Brandon H. Lee) died during the massive multi-dojo brawl at the Sekai Taikai in the final moments of season 6 part 2.
In the chaos of the skirmish, Kwon found a knife dropped at the edge of the mat by Sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove) and pocketed it before returning to a fight with Iron Dragons dojo member Axel Kovačević (Patrick Luwis). He attempted to kill Axel with the knife, but Axel kicked Kwon’s foot as he was in the air, which caused Kwon to land directly on the knife. Kwon’s body was turned over to reveal the knife sticking out of his chest and blood pooling around him, with the entire tragic moment live-streamed to the world.
Though some fans hoped that Kwon would somehow return alive and well in the new episodes, his death was confirmed when he was laid to rest at the beginning of part 3. The opening of episode 11 cut between a scene of the teen’s burial and a tense conversation between Kreese and Sensei Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim).
“What about his family?” Kreese asked, to which Da-Eun responded, “He did not have one. We have been his family since he was a boy.”
Kreese expressed guilt over leaving his knife behind for Kwon to find, adding, “This is my fault. I caused this.”
Why Was Kwon Killed Off in ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6?
After part 2’s release in November 2024, Cobra Kai creators Hayden Schlossberg, Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald explained their decision to end Kwon’s life, revealing that it was necessary for Kreese’s character development. He had trained Kwon to fight with no mercy, but Kwon’s fight with Axel proved that this mentality can backfire.
“Kreese is more vengeful than ever, and using Kwon as this ultimate weapon,” Schlossberg said to Variety. “It ends with this Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla fight all the students are involved in. It created an opportunity for us to have Kreese see the results of some of his actions. … Watching one of his students get killed with the knife he brought there.”
Heald added, “The knife represents Kreese’s last vestige of humanity. It’s an inflection point — does it send him further down the spiral or does it create an opportunity for change? That’s a big question we want people to be chewing on at the end of these five episodes.”
Who Else Dies in ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6?
Kwon’s death was not the only one fans witnessed in Cobra Kai season 6, as three other characters met their demise in part 3.
The first is Kim’s grandfather, Master Kim Sun-Yung (C.S. Lee), who declared that Cobra Kai would return to the Sekai Taikai after Kwon’s death and seek vengeance. He insisted that Da-Eun learn a brutal fighting technique and then teach it to the students, and he told her to kill Kreese once he learned that the war veteran no longer wanted to be part of Cobra Kai. However, Kreese instead convinced Da-Eun that she didn’t have to be like her grandfather. She killed Master Kim using the technique that he taught her.
In an epic ending to part 3, both Kreese and friend-turned-enemy Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) also met their demise when Kreese blew up the yacht they were fighting on during their final showdown. He sacrificed his life so that Silver couldn’t follow through with a plan to kidnap Carmen Diaz (Vanessa Rubio) and her newborn daughter, Laura.
