When is How to Train Your Dragon available to stream, rent and buy?
If you’re a fan of dragons, Disney has a new fantasy feature for you, based on the animated smash hit from 2010. A live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon once again brings you the tale of Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless.
Hiccup is a teenage son of Stoick the Vast, chief of the Vikings living in the village of Berk. The villagers struggle with attacks from dragons, who steal their cattle and destroy their homes. While Hiccup isn’t a skilled warrior, he constructs a machine that shoots down a Night Fury, a rare and dangerous dragon. Setting out in search of his prey, Hiccup discovers a young dragon, whom he befriends, breaking the centuries-old tradition of dragon-hunting.

In the UK, tickets are available on Vue, Showcase, Odeon or Cineworld.

When will How to Train Your Dragon be released on VOD?
Universal Pictures, which distributes How to Train Your Dragon, hasn’t yet revealed any information on the movie’s digital premiere. However, we’ll try to predict when the film may be available to buy or rent, based on the studio’s previous releases.
In the UK, Wicked, the hugely successful adaptation of the stage musical, arrived on VOD 42 days after premiering in cinemas. Twisters, a sequel to a ’90s disaster movie, arrived after 47 days. Thus, How to Train Your Dragon, which premiered on 9 June, could arrive on digital between Monday, 21 July 2025 and Saturday, 26 July 2025.
In the US, Universal used to launch its films on digital platforms rather quickly. Wicked dropped on VOD 39 days after its cinematic debut, while Twisters needed only 25 days to do so.
Therefore, in the States, How to Train Your Dragon could premiere on digital between Tuesday, 8 July 2025 and Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

When will How to Train Your Dragon be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
Physical copies of Universal’s most successful movies usually hit stores a month or two after the digital release.
In the United Kingdom, Twisters arrived on DVD and Blu-ray after 42 days, while Wicked turned up after 66 days since debuting on VOD. It’s then possible that copies of How to Train Your Dragon will appear in UK stores between Monday, 1 September 2025 and Tuesday, 30 October 2025.
In the States, Wicked dropped on DVD and Blu-ray only 35 days after VOD premiere. However, Twisters was released after 70 days. Therefore, we estimate that US-based viewers could buy copies of How to Train Your Dragon between Tuesday, 12 August 2025 and Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
When could How to Train Your Dragon be released on streaming services?
In the US, How to Train Your Dragon will first stream on Peacock. Twisters appeared on streaming really quickly, only 24 days after hitting DVD and Blu-ray. However, for Wicked fans had to wait longer – it was launched on Peacock 45 days after releasing on Peacock.
We estimate that in the States, How to Train Your Dragon will drop on streaming service between Friday, 5 September 2025 and Friday, 14 November 2025.
Regarding the UK, for now it’s hard to say when and where the movie will be available for streaming.
