At least three people died and two others were hospitalized after a gruesome multi-vehicle crash on a California highway.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the violent crash happened Tuesday in Ontario around 1 p.m. on the westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway just east of the 15 Freeway.

The pile-up included “as many as eight vehicles, including four semi-trucks,” ABC7 Los Angeles noted.

Dashcam footage shows a semi-truck crashing into the back of an SUV and ramming into other vehicles.

CHP officials arrested the 21-year-old driver of the semi-truck on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

“The video is the subject of a law enforcement investigation,” the outlet stated.

Sky5 footage from the scene showed four tractor-trailers and four other vehicles were involved in the pileup, including one vehicle that was too badly charred and mangled to determine the make or model.

In addition to three people who died, two other people were hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.

The collision forced the closure of all westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway, except for FasTrak, causing extensive backups throughout the Inland Empire.

“Authorities have identified the driver of a tractor-trailer that caused a deadly pileup on the 10 Freeway, and say he faces charges for vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs,” KTLA wrote.

ABC7 Los Angeles noted:

The driver of the Freightliner tractor-trailer combination that slammed into the SUV was identified as 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh from Yuba City. He was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and vehicular manslaughter.

“He was eventually transported to the hospital, and he was checked out by the medical staff, and our officers determined he was driving under the influence of drugs,” said CHP Ofc. Rodrigo Jimenez.

On Wednesday, Eyewitness News learned one of the victims was identified as a 54-year-old man from Upland. His name hasn’t been released. The remaining two were severely burned in the crash and have not been identified.

“For us officers, it’s really horrific to see, not just the deceased person, but knowing that this person’s family is going to receive the worst possible news of their life,” Jimenez said.
