U.S. and Iranian negotiators made “significant progress” Thursday in nuclear talks in Geneva, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi said, with technical discussions expected next week in Vienna.

Oman mediated the latest round, which included indirect and direct sessions between Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The talks stretched over several hours with both morning and afternoon sessions. Sources familiar with the negotiations said the U.S. delegation was “disappointed” by Iran’s positions during the morning session.

The U.S. pressed for permanent restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program, including destruction of key sites, surrender of enriched uranium, and long-term compliance. Iran rejected giving up enrichment entirely, proposing instead limited uranium enrichment under International Atomic Energy Agency supervision, including low-level enrichment for medical purposes.

Al-Busaidi said both sides are exchanging “creative and positive ideas” and hope to build on Thursday’s progress in follow-up consultations with Washington and Tehran.
