The US is in early talks with the Taliban about possibly re-establishing a small US military presence at Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base for counterterrorism missions.

The Taliban hasn’t agreed, and Afghan officials have rejected any US troop return while leaving open economic and political cooperation, reported WSJ.

Discussions also include prisoner exchanges and economic ties, but no plans are in place yet.

Taliban Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid — “Afghans are extremely sensitive about occupation, and no Afghan will ever allow their land to be taken or controlled by outsiders – not even an inch.

“The US should engage with Afghans politically, diplomatically, and rationally.

“Bagram is part of Afghanistan’s territory. It is no different from any other piece of Afghan land. We will never agree to bargain away or hand over any part of our country,” reported Al Arabiya.
