President-elect Donald Trump trolled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a Truth Social post on Monday, calling him the “Governor” of “the Great State of Canada”.”

During Trump’s meeting with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago last week., he reportedly told the Canadian leader that if his country couldn’t afford to pay a potential tariff, it should consider becoming the 51st state.

Two sources who were at the same table said Trump’s comment caused Trudeau to “laugh nervously. “

Trump wrote in a Truth Social post:

“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.”

“I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT.”

The President-elect’s post came just hours after Trudeau said that Americans “are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive.”

Trudeau added that he would retaliate if Trump implemented the tariffs next year.

“It would also, however, mean real hardship for Americans as well,” Trudeau said.

“Americans import 65% of their crude oil from Canada, significant amounts of electricity. Just about all the natural gas exported from Canada goes to the United States.”

“They rely on us for steel and aluminum. They rely on us for a range of agriculture imports. All of those things would get more expensive.”

Trump threatened to levy a 25% tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico unless the countries secrued their border.

“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump said last month.

“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”

Trudeau called an emergency meeting after Trump’s tariff threat.

While he appeared to downplay any disagreement with Trump, Trudeau was visibly panicked.

“We talked about how the intense and effective connections between our two countries flow back and forth,” he told reporters, appearing flustered.

“We talked about some of the challenges that we can work on together.”
