President Donald Trump has signed an executive order (date) officially pulling the U.S. out of a notoriously “alarmist” climate change body that formed the basis for the Paris Climate Accords in the United Nations (UN).

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was conceived as the United Nations’ (UN) scientific committee on climate change under the Paris Accords, which Trump pulled support for in January of 2025. The IPCC has made alarmist and erroneous predictions over its history, including that the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035, a statement which the body later retracted due to lack of scientific foundation.

“Unaccountable international institutions like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have leveraged alarmist rhetoric in their attempt to sway public policy in the United States and across the world,” State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “These organizations set arbitrary targets that are then used to limit America’s energy independence and industry, while providing no repercussions for major industrial nations like China or India.”

The IPCC was the main driver of The Paris Agreement, which set a target to not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by, among other restrictive measures, adopting green energy in place of traditional energy sources. The agreement resulted in large-scale adoption of alternative energy sources, primarily by Europe. That trend contributed heavily to the continent’s dependence on Russian gas and kneecapped hopes of staying ahead of China in energy production.

Despite the climate accord, global emissions did not slow significantly in the decade since the agreement was adopted.
