Trump leads DeSantis by 39 points among Florida GOP voters: poll

A new poll from the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab has found that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is behind 2024 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump by nearly 40 points among voters in DeSantis’ state.

The poll, released on Tuesday, found that 60 percent of likely Republican primary voters from across Florida said they would vote for Trump, while 21 percent said they would vote for DeSantis.

Responses for “don’t know” came in third at eight percent, while former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley received six percent support, and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie received two percent support. All other candidates received one percent or less.

When asked who they would vote for if the primary ticket had just Trump and DeSantis on it, 59 percent of Florida voters said they would cast their ballot for Trump, while 29 percent said they would vote for DeSantis. An additional 12 percent said they were unsure.

The poll also found that 71 percent of Florida voters believe Trump “was just exercising his right to contest the election” in relation to Trump’s actions after the 2020 presidential election, while 16 percent said Trump “went so far that he threatened American Democracy.”

“Despite historically high approval in the polls, Governor DeSantis losing steam in his home state doesn’t bode well for his national campaign,” said Dr. Michael Binder, PORL faculty director and professor of political science. “Even if you wipe out the rest of the competition in a head-to-head, Trump leads DeSantis by 20 points.”

The poll was conducted between October 23 and November 4 of 788 registered Republican voters and has a margin of error of 3.77 percent.

This comes after former Florida Governor and current Senator Rick Scott endorsed Trump on November 2, writing on X, “I’m proud to endorse @realDonaldTrump. It’s time for the Republican Party to come together, behind one candidate, and declare with one voice that we are united in our efforts to defeat Joe Biden and rescue America.”

A poll conducted by fellow state school Florida Atlantic University in July found that DeSantis was trailing Trump by 20 points.
