Trump is Getting 3 Times More Support From Black Voters Than He Got in 2016
With less than three weeks to go before the election, Vice President Kamala Harris is hemorrhaging support from a key demographic which has, historically, skewed in favor of Democrats: young black voters. According to a recent New York Times/Siena College poll, 78% of likely black voters intend to cast their ballots for Harris and 15% intend to vote for Trump. Already, Trump’s support from black voters is on track to be almost triple what he received in the 2016 election and among the highest percentages of support received by any Republican presidential candidate. Only 7% of voters surveyed said that they voted for Trump in 2020.
However, the polling data also shows that Trump is polling at 21% among black voters aged 18 to 29 and 20% among black men, much higher than among any other demographic of black voters. Of the 7% of likely black voters who said that they don’t know who they will eventually vote for, only 13% said that they lean towards Harris, while 21% said that they lean towards Trump. Among black voters aged 18 to 29 who have answered that they don’t know who they’ll vote for, 0% said that they lean towards Harris, and 50% said that they lean towards Trump. Among black male voters in the same situation, only 10% lean toward Harris and nearly 30% lean towards Trump.
The decline in support for Harris among black voters follows the vice president’s campaign “pandering” to black voters in an effort to bolster support. The New York Times reported that the “Harris campaign is facing pressure to shore up support from voters of color, who are normally reliable Democratic constituencies, and from Black men in particular. Polls show that Ms. Harris is receiving significantly lower support from Black men than President Biden did in 2020.” In order to “shore up support” among black male voters, Harris introduced a number of economic and social plans, including a loan forgiveness scheme and legalized marijuana. She also teased the possibility of reparations.

In response to Harris’s poor polling numbers, former President Barack Obama took to the campaign trail to urge young black men to vote for Harris. At a “Black Voters for Harris-Walz” event last week, Obama spoke to “the brothers,” telling them that Harris is “somebody who grew up like you, knows you, went to college with you, understands the struggles and pain and joy that comes from those experiences; she’s had to work harder and do more and overcome …”
Obama and the Harris campaign have faced criticism for the political stunt, especially from within the black community. Former professional football player and Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker told Obama, “Telling us how to vote based on color is a step backward. The bad policies of Biden/Harris have hurt us all. We need unity brother, not division!” Former Georgia state representative Vernon Jones said that Obama “should be ashamed for berating, rebuking and scolding Black men, because they won’t vote for Madam Lock Up A Brother … [a]s if we are too stupid to vote our interest and what [is] best for ourselves and our families.” He added that Obama “owe[s] every Black man in America an apology, effective immediately.”
A whole host of other black men also condemned Obama and the Harris campaign for the former president’s campaign rhetoric. One 22-year-old black voter said that “in 25 days, I’ll be joining millions of other young black men and voting for Donald J. Trump! And we don’t give a damn about what Barack Obama has to say about it.” A U.S. military veteran said, “Sorry Obama! I’m a BLACK MAN [and] I am voting for DONALD TRUMP on November 5th! And NO amount of LECTURING or SHAMING is going to change that.” Another black voter said simply, “Dear Barack Obama, I’m a proud Black man, and I am not voting for Kamala Harris.” He also tagged Obama’s official X (formerly Twitter) account in his post, quipping, “just in case you didn’t see this.”
Trump’s running mate, Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), said, “The better question for Barack Obama or anybody to ask is not ‘How dare you not vote for Kamala Harris?’” Instead, he said that “maybe they’re thinking about voting for Donald Trump because they’re sick of being censored, they’re sick of being told what to do, and they’re sick of not being able to afford the American dream. Maybe that’s why we’re getting more black voters than Republicans in the past.”
