Trump DOJ Approves Restoration Of Mel Gibson’s Gun Rights
Attorney General Pam Bondi has approved the restoration of gun rights for a number of people, including Hollywood star Mel Gibson, according to a report from the New York Times.
Gibson lost his gun rights as part of a 2011 plea agreement in a misdemeanor domestic violence case. The decision to restore the “Braveheart” star and director’s firearms rights comes just a few weeks after DOJ pardon attorney Elizabeth Oyer hit the media circuit to claim she was fired over her opposition to the move.
According to the NYT, Attorney General Pam Bondi formed a working group tasked with restoring gun rights to individuals who had been convicted of crimes in the past. The group came up with a list of 95 candidates for consideration, though Gibson was reportedly not listed among them.
After submitting the list, Oyer claimed that they received a response from the office of the deputy attorney general explicitly asking to include Gibson on the list. When asked to reconsider her position, Oyer refused and continued to withhold her recommendation.
She has since claimed that her stance on the actor’s case led to her termination, a claim the Trump Administration has denied.

Oyer claimed she had no time to vet Gibson and the potential “danger” of restoring his gun rights, noting that his 2010 misdemeanor conviction counts as a violent crime.Oyer ultimately determined that allowing him to own a gun “is not something that I could recommend lightly.”
“There are real consequences that flow from people who have a history of domestic violence being in possession of firearms,” Oyer told the New York Times. “This isn’t political — this is a safety issue.”
Despite the DOJ’s decision, Gibson may not be allowed to own a gun in all 50 states. Many Democrat-run states, including Gibson’s home of California, have different restrictions pertaining to firearms ownership.
A longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, Gibson was appointed as a special ambassador to Hollywood alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jon Voight just days before Trump’s second term began. In a Truth Social post, Trump explained that the three actors would serve as his “eyes and ears” in the entertainment capital, tasked with reviving an industry he claims has been bleeding business to foreign markets.”
