Miami Beach, Florida – To be punished for another person’s actions is wrong: “My Father’s mistakes are not mine.”

When we attack people for things they didn’t do or choose—like family, childhood or background—we degrade ourselves as a society. We send a message that no matter how hard someone works, no matter how much they overcome, they will forever be defined by someone else’s sins. That is not justice. It is not democracy. And anyone who engages in political character assassination should be shunned from our civil society. It is plain evil masquerading as politics and one of the primary reasons so many citizens have come to detest politics.

My friend, Monique Pardo Pope and her mother endured a lifetime of hardship. Monique’s childhood was marked by unthinkable challenges, but it forged her into the strong, compassionate woman that she is today. She is an extraordinary mother, wife, daughter, and an outstanding member of our community. Monique serves as a family law attorney and Guardian ad Litem, President of the Women’s Cancer Association of the University of Miami, President-Elect of the Gator Club of Miami, a member of the Miami Beach Commission for Women, an active participant in her neighborhood association and PTA, and a Miami-Dade Republican activist.

Her experiences growing up are what inspired her to become an attorney—to serve families in turmoil and advocate for the best interests of children as a Guardian ad Litem. Monique has worked tirelessly to become a productive, exemplary member of this community. She has earned everything she has—and that includes your vote.

Give her a break…she earned it and deserves your vote: Ballot No. 138

I am now asking every candidate running for the Miami Beach City Commission or Mayor to denounce the likes of Billy Corben and the political character assassinations we are witnessing. Political character assassination is a toxin, a venom that poisons our democracy and assaults our collective civility. It robs voters of the opportunity to focus on real ideas, policies, and a person’s true character. Instead of discussing solutions, campaigns devolve into mudslinging contests. Instead of focusing on the issues, we fixate on guilt by association or things beyond a candidate’s control.

We must demand better. We must demand campaigns that focus on policies—not personal destruction; on truth, not rumor; on the content of a candidate’s character, not the shadows of their family’s past or present.

Our nation—and our city—is stronger when we debate ideas, not smear people. Our society is healthier when we recognize that every individual deserves to be judged by their own life, their own choices, their own character.
