We have long surmised, via our network of sources in Eastern Europe, that the Russian pivot to China in 2022 was of necessity and not a desirable long-term outcome. Any student of Russian history understands the generational and well-deserved paranoia that Moscow has felt towards Beijing and East Asia. Genghis Khan comes immediately to mind, as well as the Soviet-Sino tension of the 20th century.

The same dynamic exists today, although it is temporarily masked by the idiocy of the Biden push of the Kremlin into Xi Jinping’s arms.

Territory comes to mind immediately in this fraught relationship.

It is no secret China eyes parts of Siberia for its land and natural resources. Anyone following the relationship with Russia knows this.

Trade has masked this reality, but that may be changing, as Trump enters the picture.

Russia’s trade with China, once a lifeline after Western sanctions, has dropped 8% in 2025 due to falling oil exports and shrinking Chinese car and tech sales in Russia, writes JP.

Putin will push to revive trade at a summit with Xi in Tianjin, focusing on energy and agriculture.

Despite deep reliance on China for tech and revenue, Moscow privately worries about Beijing’s dominance and transactional approach.

This is why the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin was so important.

Massive trade deals are likely in the works, which will give the Kremlin an offramp to over reliance on the CCP, which is not a long-term profitable strategy.
