REPORT: A number of Dems Will Vote To Reopen Authorities As Early As Sunday

A handful of Senate Democrats indicated on Sunday that they are willing to advance a package of bills that could end the ongoing government shutdown within 24 hours, multiple sources familiar with the matter told Axios.

At least 10 Senate Democrats are expected to support a procedural motion to advance a package of spending bills and a short term funding measure through the end of January, multiple sources from both parties told the outlet. The deal would include a vote next month on a motion to extend Obama-era Affordable Care Act (ACA) credits for one year, which would take 60 votes in the upper chamber in order to pass.

In addition, the agreement is expected to include language that would undo the federal layoffs that President Trump introduced during the shutdown.

As of Sunday afternoon, talks remain dynamic and a final agreement between the two parties has not been reached. Discussions have moved towards the most productive line of discussion yet, however, as lawmakers seek to bring an end to the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Senators are currently in Washington for a rare weekend session, and are on track to vote Sunday on a procedural motion and a government funding package. Lawmakers who left town have been asked to return immediately Sunday, indicating that a vote is likely on schedule.

In addition, the long-awaited text of the three appropriations bills that lawmakers hope to include in the deal was released Sunday afternoon.

If successful, a vote Sunday would bring an end to what has turned into the longest government shutdown in U.S. history at 39 days. Senate Democrats have voted against a temporary funding measure, known as a continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the government through late November more than a dozen times.

The party has held out in favor of legislative wishlist items, including an extension of ACA credits that are set to expire at year’s end under the terms of the Democrat-supported Inflation Reduction Act.

Sunday’s reported vote to reopen the government comes as President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on Senate Republicans to abolish the filibuster in order to end the shutdown, in addition to passing a number of legislative items like mandatory voter ID.

“How easy should VOTER I.D. (IDENTIFICATION!) be to get from the Radical Left Democrats??? There should be nothing easier, right??? Well, out of 47 Dems, we don’t have even ONE VOTE from them. That is for one reason, and one reason only — THEY WANT TO CHEAT,” the president posted on Truth Social. “THEY ARE A BUNCH OF SCOUNDRELS, CHEATERS, & PSYCHOPATHS. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER AND TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK. APPROVE VOTER I.D. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has openly admitted that the party is stalling for potential political gain. In an October 9, 2025, interview with Punchbowl News, Schumer declared, “Every day gets better for us,” claiming that polling shows Americans are blaming Republicans for the shutdown.

He went on to indicate that he has no respect for the intelligence of his own voters, stating that since Republicans “control everything,” the shutdown is on them. In reality, Senate Republicans cannot pass the clean CR without 60 votes, meaning that they will need help from Democrats.
