The earthquake hit the western part of the nation — which is located across from Spain just south of the Strait of Gibraltar.

The New York Times reported that the 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck in the High Atlas Mountains close to midnight.

The U.S. Geological Survey says that the most likely estimate for the number of fatalities from the incident ranges from 1,000 to 10,000.
