Russian President Vladimir Putin, coming off the May 9 Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, where he showcased publicly meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, has offered direction negotiations with Ukraine to begin on May 15 in Istanbul, mediated by Turkish President Erdogan.

“Our proposals are on the table, the decision is up to the Ukrainian authorities and their curators.  Russia ready for talks without any preconditions.

“There is a war going on now, and we are proposing negotiations, what’s wrong with that?

“I leave you with God, goodbye.”

It is notable Putin did not suggest the United States mediate negotiations. Perhaps this was agreed to with The White House offline, as a Russian face-saving measure. It is not clear.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ignored a call for quick 30-day cease-fire in the Ukraine war and instead offered to hold direct peace talks with Ukraine, possibly in Istanbul on May 15, “without preconditions,” reported RFERL.

Putin, speaking to reporters at a middle-of-the-night briefing in Moscow on May 11, offered to “restart” peace talks that were held by Russia and Ukraine in April 2022 — which was weeks after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.

“We are determined to have serious negotiations. Their purpose is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict…and establish a long-term, lasting peace in the historical perspective,” said Putin.

The ball seems to be in the Ukrainian camp to respond.

CDM will bring any updates as soon as we have them.
