Protesters burn Waymo robotaxis in Los Angeles after ICE raids
California Governor Gavin Newsom has promised to sue the administration. “Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight. He’s exacerbated the conditions. He’s, you know, lit the proverbial match. He’s putting fuel on this fire, ever since he announced he was taking over the National Guard—an illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act,” Newsom said in an interview.
Waymo began offering rides in Los Angeles last November, and by January, the company said it had driven almost 2 million miles in the city. But there is some animosity toward robotaxis and food delivery robots, which are now being used by the Los Angeles Police Department as sources of surveillance footage. In April, the LAPD published footage obtained from a Waymo that it used to investigate a hit-and-run. Waymo told Ars that it will only provide footage to law enforcement when presented with a warrant, and then only information directly related to that warrant.
