Passenger Becomes Ill And Passes Away On United Airlines Flight | JP

A United Airlines flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Dubai made an emergency landing at Athens International Airport in Greece after a passenger became ill mid-flight.

The passenger subsequently died after landing.

Per Aviation A2Z:

The aircraft diverted to Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos airport (ATH) while flying south of Crete when crew members became concerned about a passenger’s condition, ultimately resulting in the passenger’s death shortly after landing.

The incident occurred on United Airlines Flight UA977, operated on aircraft N2140U. While cruising over the Mediterranean south of Crete, the flight crew declared a medical emergency after a passenger experienced severe health complications.

Despite the swift decision to divert and request priority landing clearance at Athens International Airport (ATH), medical assistance came too late for the passenger, who was pronounced deceased shortly after the aircraft touched down.

According to ACARS messages from the aircraft, medical equipment including a defibrillator was utilized during the emergency.

A United Airlines aircraft en route from New York to Dubai has made an emergency landing at Athens International Airport after a passenger fell ill and subsequently died.

The UA164 flight was south of Crete when its pilot radioed Athens with a request to make an emergency landing.

The plane landed in Athens at 2.30 p.m. and is scheduled to continue on its journey to Dubai at 4.20 p.m.

In related news, a United Airlines plane flying from Melbourne, Australia, to Los Angeles declared an emergency and diverted to Brisbane.

The flight diverted to Brisbane to address a medical issue with a passenger.
