NEW: Trump pauses tariffs on Canadian imports covered by USMCA Agreement for one month
About 50 percent of imports from Mexico and around 36 percent of imports from Canada are covered in the USMCA trade policy.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump signed an executive action that would delay the 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports to the US covered by the USMCA agreement after announcing that he would do the same for Mexico earlier in the day.
According to CNN, Trump signed the executive action on Thursday that would delay the 25 percent tariffs on goods from both Canada and Mexico being imported into the US until April 2 if those goods are covered in the USMCA (United States Mexico Canada) trade agreement.
The outlet reported that about 50 percent of imports from Mexico and around 36 percent of imports from Canada are covered in the USMCA trade policy.
Earlier on Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social about the change in policy, but only had mentioned the tariffs being lifted on Mexico. “After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement,” Trump said.
“This Agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!” he added.
Sheinbaum responded to Trump saying, translated from Spanish, “Many thanks to President Donald Trump. We had an excellent and respectful call in which we agreed that our work and collaboration have yielded unprecedented results, within the framework of respect for our sovereignties.”
“We will continue to work together, particularly on migration and security issues, which include reducing the illegal crossing of fentanyl into the United States, as well as weapons into Mexico. As mentioned by President Trump, Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on all those products within the USMCA. This agreement is until April 2, when the United States will announce reciprocal tariffs for all countries.”
On Tuesday of this week, the Trump administration implemented a 25 percent tariff on all goods being imported from Mexico as well as Canada being shipping into the US, with the exception of energy out of Canada only getting hit with a 10 percent tariff.
Goods that are not included in the USMCA agreement will still be subject to the 25 percent tariff launched by Trump on Tuesday.
