NEW: Prime Democrat Targets Trump After Virginia Win

Virginia’s new governor, Abigail Spanberger, wasted no time polishing her brand of combative politics Tuesday night, taking a jab across the Potomac while she was at it.

“Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship. We chose our commonwealth over chaos,” she declared, casting herself as the level-headed antidote to D.C. drama.

Spanberger made history as the first woman to lead the Old Dominion, calling it a milestone for her family and the state. She recalled her husband telling their daughters, “Your mom is going to be the governor of Virginia,” a line meant to showcase the moment — and her trailblazing credentials.

The former congresswoman rattled off her to-do list, promising to tackle the kitchen-table issues Democrats suddenly rediscovered last cycle: “lowering costs, keeping our communities safe, and strengthening our economy.”

She even extended an olive branch to defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, thanking her for a “hard-fought race” and tipping her hat to Earle-Sears’ military and public service. Spanberger insisted she’ll work for those who didn’t back her — “My goal and intent is to serve all Virginians” — a line every winner delivers, even if half the state rolls its eyes.

Channeling the Founding Fathers, Spanberger leaned hard into Virginia’s legacy. She reminded voters they live where George Washington and Thomas Jefferson shaped the nation, declaring, “This is where American democracy was born and where we are still trying to perfect it today.”

But the kumbaya tone came with sharp elbows aimed at Washington — without naming you-know-who. She suggested the federal workforce is “under attack” and warned that policies from across the river in President Trump’s DC are “killing Virginia jobs and creating uncertainty.”

Spanberger’s win marks a pivot for Richmond — a Democrat back in the mansion promising moderation and unity, while still ready to swipe at GOP leadership in Washington. Now she’ll have to prove those lofty promises aren’t just another stump-speech script.
