NEW: Pipe Bomb Suspect Sued Trump DHS, Requested Biden DOJ To Tackle Racism
Brian Cole Jr., the suspect who allegedly planted pipe bombs outside the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee on January 5, 2021, ran a bail fund that sued the Trump-led Department of Homeland Security in an attempt to free illegal aliens from custody.
Weeks before Cole allegedly planted the bombs — which were central to the left’s narrative painting the January 6 Capitol protests as a terrorist attack — a court ruled against his lawsuit against the Trump Administration,.
Later that year, Cole held a press conference in which he railed against anti-black racism alongside infamous attorney Benjamin Crump, who gained national recognition for representing Trayvon Martin’s family. Crump has repeatedly described America as a systemically racist nation and has represented families and defendants in some of the nation’s most high-profile “police brutality” cases, including the “hands up, don’t shoot” hoax surrounding Michael Brown in 2014.
Cole and Crump urged the Biden-led Justice Department to investigate a Tennessee prosecutor who had raised questions about a bail bond company operated by Cole Jr. and his father, according to a report from the Daily Wire.
“A high-profile civil rights attorney is calling for a federal investigation into a Rutherford County prosecutor accused of discrimination,” Nashville-based news outlet WPLN reported on November 16, 2021.

Federal prosecutors announced Thursday that Cole had been arrested in connection with placing the bombs ahead of the electoral certification in 2021. An FBI affidavit in the case notes that Cole runs a bail bond company.
Cole, who is black, had accused Rutherford County Assistant District Attorney John Zimmerman of racially discriminating against him by raising concerns about his bail bond company. Zimmerman had noted that Cole’s firm had been barred from operating in a nearby district.
“I’ve never met the opposition that I’ve met with Zimmerman coming after our company the way he has. He’s defamed me, he’s called my insurance company,” Cole told reporters while standing alongside Crump at the November 2021 press conference. He went on to express the pair’s “hope” that the Justice Department will conduct a swift investigation into Zimmerman, adding, “we’ve seen a lot of questionable acts that Mr. Zimmerman has demonstrated towards minority-owned companies.”
Crump said, “It is appalling, and we want these allegations to be investigated to the highest level of government. … They called him a punk and a thug, and why? What is it about him? A lot of people believe they know the answer.”

In April 2025, a Tennessee appeals court found that sanctions against Cole’s firm were valid due to various acts of misconduct committed by Cole Sr. and others. The elder Cole lied about having never filed for bankruptcy or having other financial problems, despite the fact that he had filed for bankruptcy twice and had tax liens against him, the appeals court affirmed.
Cole Jr. and his father worked as bail bondsmen under numerous company names beginning in Fairfax County, Virginia in 2017. Public records indicate that both moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 2017, the Daily Wire reported.
One of those corporate names was StateWide Bonding, Inc. Immigration Bonds, which helps illegal immigrants avoid detention. “An Immigration Bond will secure the release of an undocumented alien from an immigration facility with the guarantee the conditions of the Immigration Bond requirements are met,” the firm’s website reads.
StateWide sued the Trump-led DHS over its handling of illegal aliens in 2020, just weeks before Cole allegedly planted the bombs. On November 10, 2020, the U.S. Court of Appeals in D.C. sided with the administration on the case, ruling that the lower court had properly thrown out all of StateWide’s claims.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that bank and phone records led to Cole’s arrest after new investigators were assigned to the case.
