NEW: Maxine Waters Under Fire For Disgusting Attack On Melania Trump
A crowd gathered in Los Angeles expected a fiery speech. But what they got from Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) was a moment that left even some of her allies stunned.
Speaking at a rally aimed at dismantling the Trump-era Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Rep. Waters delivered a speech that veered beyond policy critiques and into a fiery personal jab—one that even left some of her allies taken aback.
“When he [Trump] talks about birthright, and he’s going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America,” Waters said. “If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania.”
She doubled down seconds later, adding, “We don’t know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look.”
The crowd erupted in cheers.

Waters’ comment quickly made national headlines. Though likely intended as a rhetorical counterpunch to Trump’s past immigration policies, many critics viewed it as a call for the deportation of the First Lady—despite the fact that Melania Trump became a naturalized U.S. citizen nearly two decades ago, in 2006.
Melania, born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia (formerly part of Yugoslavia), grew up in the small town of Sevnica, located along the Sava River. After launching a modeling career in Slovenia, she worked in Milan and Paris before moving to New York City in 1996 to pursue more high-profile modeling opportunities.
She is the second First Lady in U.S. history to be born outside of the country, following Louisa Adams, and the only one to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.

The rally was organized to protest the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which was established under the Trump administration with the stated goal of cutting bureaucratic waste and improving efficiency in federal agencies. Waters, however, sees the agency differently.
“I am not surprised to see reports that Trump, HUD Secretary Scott Turner, and the DOGE Ketamine Klan have plans to decimate the federal agency charged with creating affordable housing, ending homelessness and illegal discrimination, and strengthening communities,” Waters said in a statement last month.
The backdrop to Waters’ remarks centers on President Trump’s recent efforts to challenge birthright citizenship. In January, Trump signed Executive Order 14160, which aims to curb automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S. if the mother was in the country illegally or on a temporary visa and the father was neither a U.S. citizen nor a lawful permanent resident.
The executive order, which would only apply to births after February 19, was quickly met with legal challenges. Federal judges across the country blocked its implementation, declaring it unconstitutional.
As of now, the battle remains tied up in the courts. The Trump administration is appealing the rulings, while the Supreme Court has yet to issue a final decision.
